Changing IBM Connections email notifications

IBM Connections can get a bit overwhelming in default email notifications. IBM offered customizations to the email digests starting back in version 3. What the administrator has to decide is what the defaults shall be for users.

From the defaultEmailPreference section of notification-config.xml, the administrator can control
most of the default settings for email preferences available to all users

Lotus Greenhouse seems to have the defaults set to notify you of pretty much everything all the time.  I went in and adjusted quite a few and it got me thinking about best practices for users. Admins can allow users to specify their own settings.

Users can work with:
  • individual emails
  • daily newsletter
  • weekly newsletter
  • no email
Administrators can also enable default templates to be used for the notifications to give us a look and feel for the organization.  IBM Connections 4.0 updated their wiki documentation on how to customize the email digests.

I will note that making and customizing templates is a lot of work and should be built cleanly into the system.  The amount of low level file changes and work is unreasonable.
