The D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router & Charger (DIR-510L) is the next step in portable routers for the road warrior. With AC band, profiles, USB charging ports, USB 3G/4G support, router, access point and more.
I have numerous portable routers, repeaters and access points now (most with reviews up). D-Link is trying to bridge together more than a few features in one device and has done so very well. This also adds the newer AC band for improved speed but you need your devices and network to support it or just plan on the more common 5Ghz speeds. Let's dig into each capability they brought together into one device.
As a travel router, the D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router & Charger (DIR-510L) meets the needs for the entry to all but the heaviest needs person. You can connect the device to the hotel/public network via the Ethernet on the bottom of the D-Link or via wifi. There is also the ability to use a 3G USB modem plugged into the side. I was able to test all three (keeping in mind I was lucky to have a supported 3G USB modem. See their website for updated lists). The wall plus is included to operate the router and charge the internal battery. You can also operate in the batter mode. The length of usage depends on how much usage the device is getting to be honest. I had varying results.
The admin interface on the router was quite simple and as other reviewers pointed out, a cool feature is the profiles where you can save multiple configurations for connectivity. For example, you visit a few hotel chains regularly (or even a coffee shop) and can easily switch the router to work between them.
The power switch on the top of the D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router & Charger (DIR-510L) has three modes, so pay attention to which one you selected before getting frustrated. I realized I had selected charge mode instead of on once. As a side note you will need it in charge mode for charging tablets, but the other USB port can charge a phone and act as a router at the same time.
The side USB ports serve a few purposes. The built in battery serves more than just making this router work without the wall plug. One allows you to charge phones via the .5 amp port and the other tablets via the 1 amp port. Keep in mind this is not a huge battery in terms of recharge power compared to some new portable chargers. This is just an added bonus.
The USB port can also be used to plug in a drive and stream your own data. This was a great feature to allow everyone easy access to files and media. As well we carrying around a bunch of movies to watch across my devices when on the road.
Why not 5 stars for the D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 Portable Router & Charger (DIR-510L) you ask? I wished the admin UI inside of the device would have a default basic mode and then an option for an advanced mode. To fully meet most every need of the road warrior there are some additional features, like port forwarding for example, in other travel routers that may be needed.
