We had the chance to use the D-Link Wireless AC750 Mbps Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender (DAP-1520) while at World Cup in Brazil. This small piece of tech incredibly improved our lodging wifi signal. Read the review below.
We just returned form using the D-Link Wireless AC750 Mbps Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender (DAP-1520) at World Cup in Brazil as a repeater for wifi networks to give us better strength at our lodgings. This is one impressive unit that has worked immediately.
Setup was so simple. You have two choices. If you have access to the router itself (not likely in hotels) then simply press the WPS button on both the router and this device after you have plugged it in and powered it up. You then have an access point ready to go.
If you do not have access to the physical router then plug this device into the wall, connect to it directly via wifi via it's own web enabled interface and walk through the simple wizard to pick and authenticate with the wifi signal of your choosing.
We configured the D-Link Wireless AC750 Mbps Compact Wi-Fi Range Extender (DAP-1520) to use our own SSID names so we always connected to it no matter where we were once it was set up for that hotel/location. (You can have it set to the same SSID for your home for simplicity, but we wanted the stronger signal everywhere we went.) While inside the hotel we actually moved this around with us to the dining area, pool are and more where normal hotel signal was weak. We just plugged it in, waited for it to connect to the hotel and we were back online.
What we gained was about 5 times better throughput on average across directly connecting to the hotel networks sitting in the same room. For example, we could sit at the room desk and get 2MB down from the hotel access point. We configure the D-Link to connect to the hotel and our device to the D-Link. Throughput jumped (remember we did not move anything) to 10MB. This was seen each and every time (the performance increase that is). Being geeks we tested this all the time.
One con we did find with the D-Link is we would need to unplug and plug it back in to reset it every day or so. I am not sure what caused it but prolonged usage would definitely show a slowdown. Maybe it grabbed a bad access point at the hotel or maybe it was just using it caused issues. Either way the unplug/plug it back in worked great and took under a minute.
A great product for travel, extending your home network to hard to reach areas with weak signal and even to outdoors. As long as this can see a decent signal from your router/access point then it will work great. Going on my recommended list.
